Dear Mr Taxman, tax doesn’t have to be taxing

Dear Mr Taxman, As I understand it tax doesn’t have to be taxing. I know this because HMRC has spent large amounts of my and other taxpayers’ money telling us this. Despite the reassuring nature of these adverts, I must admit to having had my doubts as to whether the statement was true. In fact, on some of my more painful trips to your website to try and understand the tax system and its various credits, I’ve often unkindly thought your slogan was meaningless tripe dreamt up by an overpaid advertising executive. Now, I know the error of my thinking and that I was missing a trick. The news that HMRC has managed to cock up millions of tax bills, with some people owed money and others owing money, makes me realise that you were in fact trying to make an existential statement in the advert. Tax doesn’t have to be taxing. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to be difficult – it is actually a deep philosophical questioning of the entire meaning of tax. All along you’ve been telling us that yes tax can involve taxing people, but it might also involve taxing them too much, or taxing them too little. For too long tax has been boring. Now you’ve made it fun, with a lottery-like system of gain and pain. Mr Taxman, we salute you. Yours sincerely Simon Lambert PS. If you do write to me, please send a rebate not a demand
