Do You Trust These People With Your Credit Card?

Keeping your credit card information secure is one of the major rules of successful financial management and is a lesson that every person interested in obtaining a credit card learns before ever receiving their card.  So why do so many of us give our credit card information to nearly any one that asks?  There are many individuals and companies that should not be trusted with your credit card information, yet chances are that you have disclosed your information to at least one of the members of the list recently.

Your Minor Children

Children are not normally known for making the most responsible decisions, but there are thousands of parents out there that do not think twice about trusting their darling with their credit card number.  This is especially dangerous when the child has access to the internet and makes purchases online using that credit card number or uses the credit card number to obtain time or accessories for online gaming.  Instead of trusting the number to your children, you should make the purchases yourself after determining if the purchase is needed.

Friends & Extended Family

It is estimated that 13% of all identity theft cases are the result of friends or family members that do not live in the home stealing a credit card or the credit card number from an unsuspecting individual.  Although we would like to believe that these trusted people always have our best interests at heart, the truth is that we can never know someone’s intentions so it is best to be wary at all times.  Never lend your credit card to anyone or leave credit card statements out in plain sight where the information could be compromised.

Employees & Contractors

Although handing your credit card over to the housekeeper or contractor to purchase supplies may save you some time, if they do anything else with the credit card it will cost you dearly in both time and money.  These individuals may be the most upstanding individuals in the world, but if something happens with the credit card while in their possession or they allow the information to be compromised, you are the one responsible for fixing the issue and any monetary charges that are associated with the problem.  To avoid this, the only you and your authorized co-signers should make charges to your credit cards.
